Dr. Kimberly Burton

Director, Title I Programs - Wake Co Public School System

Kimberly is currently in her 29th year of service in education. She began her career in 1994 as a Kindergarten teacher in the Newport News Public School System in Newport News, VA. After only three years of teaching Kindergarten, Kimberly developed a strong desire to work with under-privileged, economically disadvantaged children who struggled to read, so she applied for and acquired a reading specialist position, as a Reading Recovery Teacher within Newport News Public Schools.

In 2000, Kimberly moved to Wake County, NC with her family and joined the Wake County Public School System. In Wake County Public Schools, Kimberly has served as a Title I Reading Specialist, a Title I District Support Reading Specialist, Assistant Principal, and Principal. She currently serves as the Wake County Public School System’s, Director of Title I Programs.

IOver the past 29 years in her career, Kimberly has stayed true to her calling to serve in the field of education. Growing up as a child in rural, eastern NC, Kimberly knows first-hand the importance of ensuring students from all zipcodes have equitable access to quality education. In her daily work, she is a part of helping students understand that their environments do not have to dictate their futures!

An advocate for excellence through equity in education for all students, Kimberly is a proud 1994 graduate of Elizabeth City State University (B.S. in Elementary Education), a 1996 graduate of Christopher Newport University (Master’s Degree in Reading), a 2006 graduate of University of Phoenix (Master’s Degree in Administration & Supervision), and a 2021 graduate of High Point University (Doctorate in Education).

Kimberly has been married to her husband, Will, for 24 years. They live in Garner, NC with their two children, Kameron (22) and Kennedy (12). Kameron is a PHD Nanoscience and Nanoengineering student at NC A &T State University and Kennedy is a 7th grader at Cleveland Middle School.
